A substantial operation by the Royal Thai Police (RTP) yesterday, culminated in the seizure of an illicit factory manufacturing kratom leaf juice. The raid led to the confiscation of around 3000 bottles of cough syrup, three guns, and the arrest of one suspect.

The RTP stormed into the clandestine factory situated along Khlong Toei-Khlong Ple Road nearby the Kho Hong intersection in Songkhla province. The factory produced a wide variety of kratom products including fresh kratom leaves, concentrated kratom leaf juice, carbonated beverage and even cough syrup.

Whilst examining the site of the illegal operation, officials recovered various illicit items, foremost amongst these being 2,760 bottles of cough syrup. There was also cash amounting to 7,950 baht (US$ 229), a 9 mm semi-automatic pistol with 13 rounds of ammunition, a .38-calibre revolver with 50 rounds of ammunition and a .12-calibre shotgun with 10 rounds of shells. Notably, the first two weapons were registered, whilst the third, the .38-calibre firearm, appeared to be unregistered.

The establishment also contained a mini-manufacturing plant for producing kratom leaf juice at the back. The site was equipped with ten gas stoves, ten large pots for boiling kratom leaves and ten large ice buckets. The cleanliness of the premises left a lot to be desired, raising additional public health concerns over the retail products it produced, reported KhaoSod.

Nitipat (surname withheld), a 28 year old man, was apprehended following the raid. He faces three charges: possession for sale of a currently scheduled substance (cough syrup), possession of firearms and ammunition without permission, and illegal possession of firearms and ammunition. He has been transferred to the Songkhla Provincial Police Department for further legal proceedings.

The RTP raid was reportedly instigated following intelligence suggesting that a shop selling kratom leaves was covertly producing and distributing kratom leaf juice and related products. Not only did the establishment act as a small-scale kratom juice factory, but it also possessed several illicit items, including cough syrup and firearms, particularly the three seized guns.

Nitipat, however, argued that he had only recently started storing the firearms for self-protection after an incident involving delinquents who had attempted to steal marijuana and were subsequently apprehended.

In a humorous incident that amused Thai netizens, a woman from Thailand, took to TikTok to apologise to a taxi driver whom she had inadvertently startled with her golden face. The woman, Nitcha Punnapon, had her face covered in gold leaves after undergoing the Na Na Thong ceremony, and it had quite a surprising effect on the unsuspecting cabbie.

Sharing the tale on her TikTok account, Maekaijae195, Nitcha posted a video featuring her golden face, along with a caption expressing an apology to the taxi driver. She explained that she had been waiting for a taxi in front of a temple at 1 am, adorned with golden leaves. Her intention behind going through the Na Na Thong ceremony was to enhance her charm and prosperity.

In the video, Nitcha disclosed the cabbie’s reaction, which turned out to be rather flattering.

“You are beautiful already. I am sure that the ceremony will make you more beautiful and charming as you wish. Your beauty is gonna torture men. They will be obsessed with you!”

His kind words, however, did not alleviate the initial shock caused by her golden appearance.

In a subsequent video, Nitcha urged her followers not to laugh at her, emphasising that the ceremony held deep personal significance for her. She then proceeded to explain the process of the Na Na Thong ritual, revealing that she had covered her face with 108 pieces of gold leaves and chanted for an astonishing five hours.

Nitcha later granted an interview with ThaiRath, where she recounted the events surrounding the Na Na Thong ceremony, which took place on August 1. The ritual commenced at 7.19pm and lasted until midnight. During the ceremony, the officiant advised all participants, including Nitcha, to keep the gold leaves on their faces for as long as possible, as it was believed to enhance the sacred and beneficial outcomes.

Consequently, Nitcha chose not to wash her face after the ceremony, unaware of the hilarious effect it would have on the unsuspecting taxi driver later on.

Despite receiving some negative comments, labelling her as gullible for believing in such rituals, Nitcha remained undeterred. She asserted her unwavering belief in the power of the ceremony and expressed her happiness at having taken part in it.

Nitcha’s story gained attention from various news agencies, highlighting the impact the Na Na Thong ceremony had on her life.

The Na Na Thong ceremony, also known as the golden face ceremony, holds great significance among the Thai people. Participants have faith that adorning their faces or bodies with gold leaves, while chanting sacred words, will lead them to success in their careers or businesses. However, those who partake in the ritual are expected to adhere to specific moral guidelines, including refraining from lying, controlling anger, and respecting Buddhist precepts.

Nitcha’s unintentional spooking of the taxi driver serves as a lighthearted reminder of the intriguing cultural practices and beliefs that continue to thrive in Thailand.

A pickup truck collided with a train in the early hours of this morning killing eight Thai people and injuring three others near Klong Udon Chonlajon in Chachoengsao province near Bangkok.

Mueang Chachoengsao Police Station officers and a rescue team promptly rushed to the scene at approximately 3am today, August 4. They found a train, laden with containers, positioned on the railway tracks. Around 50 meters away from the train’s front, lay a completely wrecked bronze Isuzu pickup.

According to the police report, the victims were identified as five men and three women, all found dead along the railway. The three injured individuals were swiftly transported to the hospital, with one of them in critical condition, suffering from a broken left arm and right leg. The other two sustained relatively milder injuries, comprising of wounds and bruises.

The pickup driver, 55 year old Wichai Yulek, miraculously escaped the accident unharmed and waited at the scene to provide his account of the incident. Wichai recounted that he and 11 other colleagues were en route from Bua Roi Temple in the Latkrabang district of Bangkok to a fish farm in the Klong Udom district of Chachoengsao province.

As they approached the railway, Wichai noticed the oncoming train and came to a stop. However, one of the passengers urged him to proceed, assuring him that they could cross the railway in time. Tragically, they could not make it in time, and the train collided with the back of the pickup, where most of the colleagues were seated.

In a contrasting account reported by Channel 8, it was suggested that the driver might not have noticed the approaching train due to poor visibility caused by the dark accident spot and the elevated position of the railway, creating a blind spot for motorists. Disturbingly, pictures shared by news agencies revealed the absence of a barrier gate or warning light at the location to signal motorists about the oncoming train.

Suraphat Prasop, a 20 year old passenger who suffered injuries, recalled the terrifying moment. Many of his colleagues were asleep when the incident occurred, but he quickly realized that the train would collide with the pickup.

Displaying immense bravery, Suraphat decided to jump out of the vehicle to save his life. He urged his colleagues to do the same, and in those terrifying moments, he heard the train whistle three times before the crash occurred.

The fish farm they were heading to was just 5 kilometres away from the accident scene.

The rescue team promptly transferred the eight dead bodies to the Chachoengsao Charity Cemetery for an autopsy. Additionally, relevant departments have set up a centre to aid the deceased’s relatives in retrieving the bodies for the funeral ceremony.
