An 85 year old Dutchman’s Christmas turned into a near-tragedy when he was rushed to hospital after a harrowing poolside incident at a Pattaya condominium.

The Sawang Boriboon Rescue Centre received an urgent report yesterday at 2pm about a foreign man who had nearly drowned at a condo on Soi Yen Sabai. Rescuers raced to the scene to find the unconscious man, later identified as Hermann from the Netherlands, with a serious head injury.

Friends and hotel staff were desperately performing CPR, but the victim remained unresponsive. Rescue teams deployed an automatic CPR machine before rushing him to the hospital.

Praiwas, a 58 year old condo employee, recalled the moment he realised something was wrong.

“I was working on the upper floor when I heard cries for help. I rushed down and immediately called the rescue team.”

Initial investigations suggest Hermann may have slipped on the stairs leading to the pool, hitting his head on the pool’s edge before falling into the water. However, the exact cause of his head injury remains unclear. Pattaya police are reviewing CCTV footage to piece together what happened.

This incident underscores the importance of poolside safety, especially for older adults and during bustling holiday periods. Rescue teams, local police, and witnesses acted swiftly, but the near tragedy is a sobering reminder of how quickly accidents can unfold.

Hermann’s current condition has not been disclosed, leaving family and friends hoping for good news as he recovers, reported The Pattaya News.

Maharaj Hospital in Nakhon Ratchasima is gearing up for the new year celebrations by preparing medical personnel, ambulances, and emergency vehicles for the critical Seven Dangerous Days. However, the hospital is facing a shortage of 400 units of blood and is urgently seeking donations.

The deputy director of Maharaj Hospital, Jedsada Bun-Ya-Wong-Viroj, has disclosed plans to ensure readiness during this high-risk period. The hospital has mobilised medical teams and emergency vehicles from partner networks of the Accident and Emergency Centre, coordinated through the EMS command system, to assist patients and accident victims. Each day, a specialist in accidents will be on duty, available to respond immediately. Furthermore, six additional major operating rooms have been opened to enhance the hospital’s medical service capacity.

Daily operations have been taxing, receiving over 400 calls via the emergency number 1669, averaging more than 10 calls per hour. Of these, 15% are cases requiring resuscitation assistance. Unfortunately, there have also been instances where individuals, including those with mental health issues and juveniles, have made nuisance or false calls. These actions might be attempts to vent abnormal emotions or due to a lack of understanding.

Such disruptions create challenges for the telephone command system, a vital and easily accessible communication channel for the public. They result in wasted time verifying the calls and potentially delay medical personnel from reaching actual emergency sites promptly, reported KhaoSod.

Every new year period, the hospital typically requires approximately 1,200 units of blood and platelets. Currently, only 800 units are in reserve, highlighting the need for an additional 400 units. Therefore, the hospital is appealing for more blood donations to meet this urgent demand.

A resident found a mysterious sack placed in front of their home in Surat Thani province, which, upon inspection, revealed 14,000 methamphetamine (meth) pills. The incident prompted immediate action by local police to trace the origins of the drugs.

At the office of the Narcotics Control Centre within Phunphin district, Surat Thani province, officials gathered to address a significant drug-related find at 11am yesterday, December 25. Among those present were Wisut Intrakamnerd, the District Chief of Phunphin, Chaiyarat Yusang, the Deputy District Chief of Security, Saiyan Saengsawat, the Deputy District Chief of Bang Madeua Subdistrict, and members of the Phunphin Territorial Defence Volunteer Company 7. They collaborated with Sumerang Kuadoung, the village headman, and Somprach Jantana, the village chief of Village 7, to seize the meth pills that had been abandoned near a residence in Village 7, Bang Madeua subdistrict, Phunphin district.

The sequence of events began at 1pm on December 24 when Wisut Intrakamnerd and the security team were alerted by Sumerang Kuadoung and Somprach Jantana about the suspicious sack found beside a fence at house number 11 in Village 7. Upon receiving the report, officials, led by Chaiyarat Yusang and Saiyan Saengsawat, along with volunteers, were dispatched to the scene to investigate further.

Upon arrival, they met with the homeowner, Boonnaam (surname withheld), who recounted the events leading to the discovery. Boonnaam explained that around 11am, she had left her house to purchase rice. Upon returning, she noticed a fertilizer sack placed against her barbed wire fence under a mango tree entwined with passionfruit vines. Suspecting something illicit, she promptly contacted the village chief and headman to examine the suspicious package.

“I suspected it contained something illegal and immediately informed the local police.”

    Shocking find

The examination of the sack revealed yet another layer—a black plastic bag. Inside this bag, they found a carefully wrapped package with layers of protective wrapping, including shock-absorbing plastic and foil, forming a rectangular shape. Additionally, there were two clear plastic rectangular packages emitting a chocolate aroma. Upon closer inspection, the packages contained meth pills, amounting to 14,000 in total.

Police are now focused on expanding the investigation to identify the owner of the narcotics and to pursue legal action.

“Our priority is to trace the source and hold those responsible accountable.”

The discovery of such a large quantity of meth has raised concerns about drug trafficking in the region, prompting heightened vigilance among local law enforcement. Officials are determined to unravel the network behind this operation and prevent further instances of drug distribution in the community, reported KhaoSod.

The Orapan Melon Farm in Lopburi province has become a beacon of agricultural success, with its melons in high demand and orders booked well into the next year.

Located in the Suratikarn Organic Farmers Group area, the farm cultivates two melon varieties: the Sanwan melon, a Japanese-style fruit with green netted skin and sweet, fragrant flesh, and the Thaihao melon from China, noted for its cracked golden skin and crisp, sweet taste.

Each greenhouse at the farm measures 6.5 metres wide and 30 metres long, accommodating between 350 to 380 melon plants, depending on the season. With three greenhouses in operation, the farm strategically rotates planting cycles every 80 to 90 days, ensuring a near year-round supply with sweetness levels surpassing 19 Brix.

The farm employs innovative cultivation techniques, using sand instead of soil, with straw to retain moisture. A drip irrigation system, controlled by a timer, delivers water based on weather conditions and growth stages. This method ensures the melons are 100% pesticide-free, and grown entirely in greenhouses. Nutrient solutions A and B are used, and in the last two weeks before harvest, a 0-0-50 potassium sulphate formula is introduced to enhance the melons’ sweetness and colour. Three to five days before harvest, fertiliser is withheld, and only water is provided to prevent residue and naturally enhance sweetness. Typically, each plant yields several fruits, but only the best one is selected for sale.

Young melons from the farm are also highly versatile and can be processed into various dishes such as sour curries, clear soups, and even enjoyed with spicy dips. The demand is so high that all production rounds are pre-booked.

The farm has established a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with Aviva Study College Lopburi to develop food products from their melons. Orapan Kaewphuang, the farmer managing this venture, assures that the produce is safe for consumers, grown in protected environments, and primarily sold online through LINE groups, the organic farming network, and the Orapan Melon Farm page. Melons are a popular summer fruit, loved for their sweet and juicy flavour, and are available year-round, reported KhaoSod.

Orders pour in from across the country, with the Sanwan variety priced at 100 baht per kilogramme and the Thaihao variety at 120 baht per kilogramme. Every production cycle sees the Thai postal service facilitating direct deliveries from the farm to consumers, ensuring that the freshest fruit reaches customers promptly.

Thai telecom heavyweight True Corporation has firmly denied allegations of supplying SIM cards in bulk to call centre gangs, following a dramatic police raid in Bangkok.

The raid, carried out on December 20, targeted a condo on Rama IX Road in Huay Kwang, uncovering a staggering cache of criminal tech: 286 SIM boxes, over 300,000 SIM cards, 636 smartphones, and 100 computers. Six Chinese nationals were arrested in connection with the illicit operation.

In a statement, True clarified that the seized SIM cards had not been purchased in bulk from its major distributors.

“They were not bought from a major distributor in one lot.”

The company noted that over half the SIMs originated outside Thailand, while the rest were purchased piecemeal from local shops.

To address the issue, True pledged to trace the SIM serial numbers to pinpoint offending retailers and take decisive action. Additionally, the company revealed that none of its seized SIMs had been registered for use, underscoring its tightened controls on SIM registration.

“We are improving our operations to prevent our mobile network from being abused by criminals.”

The telecom giant highlighted the deployment of AI to flag suspicious registrations and the cancellation of contracts with shady partners.

True’s crackdown on criminal misuse includes terminating SIMs linked to call centre scams and assisting police in combating cybercrime. The company also claimed credit for alerting police when its network was exploited to remotely operate SIM boxes for fraudulent calls.

Further bolstering its defences, True has introduced the True CyberSafe feature to protect customers from phishing attacks, reported The Nation.

With a growing arsenal of tools and tougher policies, True insists it is committed to shielding its network—and its customers—from criminal exploitation.

In related news, police conducted raids on two locations, which led to the capture of a 19 year old Chinese national suspected of involvement in a sophisticated scam operation.

A bitch, believed to have been shot, struggled to return to her puppies to nurse them before succumbing to her injuries while they were still feeding. This tragic incident took place yesterday, December 25, in Songkhla province, adding a sad note to Christmas and prompting immediate action from local officials and animal welfare organisations.

A video circulated online showed a mother dog with a gunshot-like wound trying to nurse her puppies despite her critical condition. Sympathisers were moved by her maternal instincts, even as she lay dying, and the clip quickly gained widespread attention. Responding to this, Somkid Buhngachart, the leader of The Hope Songkhla, visited the scene in Ban Naplueang, Village 1, Khlong Kwang subdistrict, Nathawi district, Songkhla province, together with officers from the Nathawi Police Station and district livestock officials to assist.

Upon arrival, the team met with community leaders including Thanyarat Kaewsuk, the President of the Khlong Kwang Subdistrict Administrative Organisation, Saiyan Midni, the Deputy President, and Sompratana Chaisukang, the Village Chief, along with the dog’s owner. They brought supplies such as food, medicine, and vaccines to aid the surviving eight puppies, ensuring they received flea and tick prevention treatments and deworming.

The Hope Songkhla further provided the community leaders with three signs aimed at promoting awareness of animal cruelty laws, encouraging residents to understand the legal implications of harming animals. The welfare group also arranged for the bitch among the puppies to be spayed to prevent further breeding, allowing the owner to reclaim the puppies post-surgery. Guidance on caring for the puppies was offered, and additional food supplies were donated, reported KhaoSod.

The police have officially recorded the incident at Nathawi Police Station to ensure such acts of cruelty are not repeated in the area. The dog’s owner recounted the distressing circumstances, explaining that no one was home when the mother dog disappeared. Upon searching, the owner found her lifeless body with the puppies still nursing, and upon closer inspection, noticed a bullet-like wound but was unaware of who was responsible.

“No one was home on the day of the incident. The mother dog went missing, and despite searching, I couldn’t find her until I saw her lying dead with the puppies still feeding. Checking her wounds, I found what looked like a bullet hole but have no idea who did this.”

A significant act of compassion unfolded at Phetchabun Hospital, where a family decided to donate the organs of a 42 year old programmer who was declared brain dead. This generous donation is set to benefit four individuals in need.

Chawalit Iamsaad, who hailed from Bueng Sam Phan district in Phetchabun, was employed as a programmer for PTT, working remotely from home. On Monday morning, December 23, his sister discovered him collapsed outside the bathroom. Medical assistance was immediately summoned, and he was transported to Bueng Sam Phan Hospital before being transferred to Phetchabun Hospital. Unfortunately, doctors later confirmed that Chawalit had suffered brain death due to severe bleeding in the brain, which is considered a medical form of death.

The family, understanding the profound implications of organ donation, embraced the opportunity to contribute to the well-being of others. Chawalit’s sister, 37 year old Ketsinee, shared that her brother was known for his charitable nature, making this decision a fitting tribute to his life. She added that she had already registered her intention to donate her organs with the Thai Red Cross Society, indicating her support for such initiatives.

“This is a significant act of charity by my brother, as the organs donated can offer new life to several individuals.”

At the hospital, Doctor Srisuda Songthamwat, the director of Phetchabun Hospital, formally recognised the family’s generosity. She presented a certificate of appreciation and a wreath in honour of the deceased. Chawalit’s mother and sister accepted these tokens of gratitude on behalf of the family.

Doctor Srisuda elaborated on the medical condition of the patient, explaining that despite comprehensive medical efforts, Chawalit’s condition was irreversible. The donated organs, including two kidneys and two eyes, have the potential to save or significantly improve the lives of up to four individuals. She hopes this act of kindness will inspire others in Phetchabun and across Thailand to consider organ donation, reported KhaoSod.

“Giving organs to others is a great act of charity, offering the gift of life to those in need.”

Thailand’s New Year’s Eve celebrations offer something for every budget, but costs usually go up during this busy season. In popular places like Bangkok and Phuket, hotel prices can double or even triple. For budget travellers, hostels and guesthouses are good options, with dorm rooms costing 200 to 600 THB (US$6 to US$18) per night if booked early.

Transportation in Bangkok stays affordable, with public transport being the best choice. A BTS Skytrain day pass costs 150 Thai baht (a little over US$4) and makes it easy to get around the city. Food prices vary too—street food is budget-friendly at 50 to 130 Thai baht (US$1.50 to US$4) per meal, while mid-range restaurants charge between 240 to 1000 Thai baht (US$6 to US$30) for New Year’s specials.

For those on a budget, enjoying the festivities can cost as little as about 684 to 1711 Thai baht (US$20 to US$50) per day by sticking to free events, using public transport, and eating street food. On the other hand, luxury seekers can spend more on high-end hotels with exclusive countdown parties and gala dinners, costing 3,000 to 10,000 Thai baht (US$90 to US$300) per person, including meals and entertainment.

While prices are higher during New Year’s Eve due to demand, Thailand still offers plenty of choices for both budget-friendly and luxury experiences.

Thai people celebrate New Year’s Eve, also called the Western New Year, with a mix of modern events and traditional customs. Here’s how they usually mark the occasion:

    • Countdown events: Many join large countdown celebrations, especially in big cities like Bangkok. Central World is a popular spot with concerts, performances, and fireworks lighting up the night as midnight approaches.
    • Temple visits: As midnight nears, many Thai Buddhists visit temples to pray, light candles, and listen to monks chant, wishing for good luck in the new year.
    • Family gatherings: New Year’s Eve is also a time for families to come together. They share meals and enjoy the evening, blending traditional customs with modern celebrations.
    • Fireworks and sky lanterns: Along with big fireworks displays in cities, people in northern areas like Chiang Mai often release sky lanterns (khom loy). This tradition symbolises letting go of past worries and hoping for good fortune.
    • Merit-making ceremonies: Some take part in special rituals, like using a white ceremonial thread (sai sin) that connects a Buddha statue to attendees, symbolising shared blessings.

These celebrations highlight Thailand’s mix of cultural traditions and modern festivities, creating a unique and memorable way to welcome the new year.

Two decades after the catastrophic Indian Ocean Tsunami, communities along Thailand’s Andaman coast, including Phuket, gathered today, Boxing Day, to honour the lives lost and reflect on the lessons learned from that fateful day in 2004. The disaster claimed an estimated 230,000 to 280,000 lives across multiple countries, with Thailand designating December 26 as National Disaster Prevention Day in its wake.

In Thailand alone, 5,078 lives were confirmed lost, 8,457 people injured, and 3,716 missing, presumed dead. Phang Nga bore the brunt of the tragedy, with over 4,100 confirmed fatalities, including 2,213 foreign tourists. In Phuket, 259 deaths were recorded, but hundreds remain unaccounted for.

Eyewitnesses recalled the tsunami’s terrifying power.

“Patong was severely affected. The water reached as high as a three-storey building,” said Weerawit Kruesombat, President of the Patong Entertainment Association.

Mayor Chalermsak Maneesri narrowly escaped the waves, which struck at 10.40am.

“The devastation was beyond words—overturned cars, scattered debris, and so many lives lost.”

Locals like Khun Bo vividly remember the chaos.

“The sea receded so far back the beach was dry. Minutes later, the waves returned with incredible force. I climbed a tree and clung on for hours.”

Today, Phuket boasts enhanced tsunami defences, including 13 warning towers along its west coast and a buoy detection system offering up to 2.5 hours’ warning. Regular evacuation drills and community education initiatives aim to prevent a repeat of 2004’s tragedy, reported The Phuket News.

    Yet concerns linger.

“Sometimes the buoys fail. We need better inland warning systems and evacuation plans.”

Mayor Chalermsak emphasised the importance of preparedness.

“Our rescue teams are well-trained, and warning systems are tested weekly. We’ve come a long way since 2004.”

While the pain of the past endures, survivors and officials are united in their resolve to protect future generations from such devastation.

An Australian father still mourns his teenage son lost to the waves 20 years ago. As the ocean roared back with walls of water up to 30 metres high, the 67 year old Aussie dad tried desperately to protect his son who had Down’s syndrome. Holding his son against a hotel pillar, the man was swept away by the sheer force of the wave.
