New tax, on sugary drinks to be applied from October 2019. The Thai government seems to finally take the mesure of the deadly excess of sugar in a lot of products. Sugar is an addictive product, that can make people sick if consumed excessively. Cancer, Diabetes, and overweight are some of the consequences of it.

In 2017, the Thai government had asked to the manufacturer to write the level of sugar on their products. At this time there were only 50-60 products with these information. 3 years after, they have accounted about 300 products with the level of sugar used on the sticker.

    Sugary drinks

Starting from October, a new tax will be imposed on sugared drinks, and this tax will be asked to the manufacturer directly so that it should not change the final price for the consumer. These taxes will help to finance the cost of the raise of needed treatment for the people who are getting sick because of the sugar.

But are they going to check the traditional Thai food one day? Most chief are using 2 big spoon of refined sugar to make the sauce of a Fried Basil chicken or porc. And Som Tam has a huge chunk of yellow cane sugar in it…

Not yet, this tax is for the sugary drinks only. But it is a first step in the right direction.

Here is the graphic with the taxes.

The street food is not more expensive in Pattaya. They have been forbidden on the beach, so that the expensive restaurants owners can fill their pockets without competition. You can find them around the supermarkets. Their prices have not changed for years.

That’s the low season feeling. Everything is more dark and humid. Wind is blowing and waves are taking the lives of some reckless tourists. The sunsets are dramatic and the tourists are staying only one night, the time to take some pictures, do some shopping and going with their buses to another direction.
The low season feeling is the same everywhere in the world. It is the time to settle and think about the future.

High season will some soon, with the air pollution and the bad numbers about tourism. Thailand has burnt all its beauty, only is left the make up and the photoshopped pictures.

Thais have exploited all their natural resources. The mass tourism has devastated the country. The corals are dead, the water is not clean, anywhere you go, plastic is on the beach, fishes lost their colors, from Phuket to Hua Hin to Pattaya.

The feeling in Pattaya has changed. Gone the smile and the kiddie Thais playing with anything and laughing all the time. Now they are all in debt, slaves like us. The smile has changed in a grimace.

Even the Thai food, filled with sugar has become toxic, Thai are complaining “why food taste so bad in Pattaya”? Because people who cook don’t care about anything else than making money, and leave.

Gone the parades every week on beach road. The festivals on the beach were quasi permanent, fruits, vegetable, schools, local associations. There was always a reason to do a parade or sell something on beach road.

Gone the fireworks when the hotels were full. Before Prayut, we had mini fireworks every day. It was like Christmas daily, and people were looking so relaxed and happy.

Gone the festive feeling at the entertainment places. The international brands are taking over and soon Pattaya will look like another city, a tourist trap built to enrich some at the expense of the majority.

Thai people do not like Pattaya. They come to make money. You can see it in their eyes, they are waiting to go back to their home, where you can sit and relax and where they are happy and have friends.

Gone Pattaya, the sex capital of the world, for 5000 bath a girl, you better stay home and call this young student that will cost you the same price there, and will be probably cleaner.

The army has destroyed the festive feeling in this country, not only in Pattaya. They are against happiness, made the life of expats a hell, complicated the visa, show their racism and xenophobia, and now that most are leaving, business are closing. If you want to see what the army like just visit Sattahip. Everything is closed at 8pm. No farang restaurants. No entertainment. It is the middle age.

The army want this country to stay retarded. They hate enjoyment and fun. Their things is buying new military trucks and do drills. So much fun – Not.

  • Extending Entertainment Hours to 4am or even to all night debate… what about sound pollution?

There is a lot of excitement, mainly from the entertainment business owners who are thinking that having 24/7 entertainment hours would be a good thing for their business. They are pushing to an extension from the 2am closing rule to 4am.

Meetings in Pattaya with all the “actors” of the entertainment sector are in full force and we will soon see some impressive declaration about the change of the limit time for the entertainment and sell of alcohol pushed from 2am to 4am.

I have even seen pools online and people who are trying to convince others about even staying open 24/7.

Loud sound is a pollution. And people need to sleep. Right now, in the event of some noisy abuse we have a phone number: 0827999111, if you call them at 2am and an establishment is not closed, they will come with their trucks and force them to close. It is working.

There are a limited number of entertainment owners who are pushing changing hours; these people are making a living of selling noise and alcohol, they don’t care if you sleep at night, making noise pollution is their business model, but they are just a hundred of people.

However I do not see any representative in these meetings of the + 1 Million people living in Pattaya permanently, working in hotels and restaurants, running the city, most of the time in dire living conditions and without too many choices to where to sleep. I also do not see any representative of the expat community who are staying in Pattaya full time and are not going out late in their majority. I also do not see any representative of the millions of people who are coming in Pattaya in transit between Bangkok and another destination, coming in buses to spend one night or two, do a Pattaya tour and then going to another destination the next day: these are 12 Million people per year. You can be sure that after a busy day in many places, like Koh Larn, they expect to have a good night of sleep before taking the bus again the next day!

After this decisions will be implemented, there will be no legal reason to stop any reckless behavior that selfish Thais like to do, for example: drinking all night with music for a birthday, private parties etc…

What if a Karaoke is opening right down to your windows at your condo, and you listen the low frequencies bam bam bam bam all day and all night? What if a super-car with a 10,000 Watts amplification stop under your window, and a bunch of Thai guys are starting to make a party and drink beers at 3am?

People living in high building will be particularly affected, the sound is traveling from far away without anything in between its source and its destination.

I think that this decision will create a nightmare scenario also for a lot of Thai people who are working in the day, going to work early in the morning with no peace in the night to rest.

I see this decision to be a very selfish one, motivated by some owners in the entertainment industry and that will not change much about what we have now, except that it will open the way to all kind of abuses.

We have the water pollution, the air pollution, this will add the sound pollution to the list. Condo owners will suffer from that new rules, I think about “The grass” condo for example that is already very exposed to the restaurants closing at 4am, is this problem will extend to all Pattaya? And all the people around Jomtien Beach where the Thais like to sit with their huge sound powered trucks. Hotels, and tourists who are traveling will get trapped in the mess, for what benefit?

This time extension should be limited to a very small portion of the city, Walking Street, soi LK and some beach soi like soi 6 and 7. For the rest of the city, the 2am law should still be enforced by the police as it is now… noise and alcohol sellers need to respect the ones who are running this city with their every work, tourists who are passing by and need to rest between two bus travels: they are the huge majority.

Subway, USA / Thailand. Not the same! If McDonald, Burger King, and KFC for example are doing the same size and have the same ingredients, it is not the case about Subway. 2 pictures I did myself, one in the USA, one in Thailand. In Thailand the ham, beef and chicken are low grade industrial crap that no one would eat in the USA.

The ham, and turkey are totally different and the quantity are not the same too. The quality is much lower in Thailand, but what about the price?
You would expect that because the business rentals are lower, the taxes are lower and the salaries are way much lower than in America, they would sell the same or better here, or at least less expensive? Nah. It is the opposite; a Meatball foot long sandwich costs $5.50 (168 baht) in America, in Thailand it is 239 baht ($7.8). #greed#thailand#subway
And for the rest of the menu, just check these 2 pictures I took myself.

The food court at Harbor was pretty much the same, over priced and guess what happened? It is closed now.
In my opinion it is a tourist trap, there is nothing better in there than in any other food court that justify the price apart from the location, so why paying 4 times the normal price? This place is doomed to fail, because of greed. At this point, Pattaya is starting to become insane about the prices, greed is so shocking and in the face that it becomes a complete turn off. If you want to attract tourists, do not rip them off! Some items are more expensive than in south of France, Singapore, Japan or Spain! Avoid.

You know about public toilets for example. But in Thailand we have public nap places. where people can stop their car , truck or bus and take a nap. Everyday I see various people parked here and sleeping.
